Chapter 160 Sweet Daily Life
Chapter 160 Sweet Daily Life
After returning to the Marshal's Mansion, everything seemed to have returned to normal.
Ling Xiaotian handled military affairs in his study, while Cheng Yuwei browsed through various books from the Republic of China, researching how to utilize her chemistry expertise in this era. The servants in the mansion had long been accustomed to this mild-tempered yet intelligent young mistress, and had even heard her argue with the Marshal on certain issues more than once.
Battle in the kitchen
One day, Cheng Yuwei had nothing to do, so she went into the kitchen to experiment with a modern dessert. She had someone buy some ingredients, but she ran into someone unexpected in the kitchen—Ling Xiaotian.
"Marshal, why are you here?" Cheng Yuwei asked in surprise.
Ling Xiaotian leaned against the door frame, his brows raised slightly, and his tone was full of teasing: "This is my mansion, I can go anywhere. And you, a dignified doctor of chemistry, are now studying how to cook?"
"What a joke! Chemistry and cooking have something in common, right?" Cheng Yuwei retorted unconvincedly, "Since you're here, why don't you just stand there and get in the way? Go help me."
"Me?" Ling Xiaotian couldn't help but laugh, "Are you sure you want me, the commander of an entire army, to be your subordinate?"
"If you don't want to, forget it. I'll do it myself!" Cheng Yuwei pouted and started fiddling with the tools in her hands.
Ling Xiaotian looked at her serious expression, sighed softly, walked over and rolled up his sleeves: "Okay, I'll play with you for a while. However, if the food you make is not delicious, I will not hold back my criticism."
"Who's afraid of you!" Cheng Yuwei raised her chin with a provocative look in her eyes.
The two of them were bickering in the kitchen, Ling Xiaotian complaining that her instructions were "disorganized," while at the same time obediently helping to beat the eggs and knead the dough as she asked. Cheng Yuwei had intended to embarrass him, but she hadn't expected him to do it quite well.
An hour later, several fragrant cookies finally emerged from the oven. Cheng Yuwei proudly placed them on a plate and held one out to Ling Xiaotian.
"How about trying it?" She looked at him expectantly.
Ling Xiaotian took a bite and frowned deliberately: "Hmm...it tastes okay, but you can use less sugar next time."
"If you think it's too sweet, don't eat it!" Cheng Yuwei snatched the plate back angrily.
Ling Xiaotian smiled and moved closer to her, whispering, "It can't be helped. Who asked you to make something so special?"
Cheng Yuwei was stunned for a moment, then blushed and pushed the plate in front of him: "Eat it all! It's so sweet that you'll die!"
A little annoyance in the garden
In the afternoon, Cheng Yuwei went to the garden to relax and found Ling Xiaotian there. He was standing under a tall cherry tree, his hands behind his back, his eyes seemed to be thinking about something.
"What big thing are you thinking about?" Cheng Yuwei walked over and asked.
Ling Xiaotian turned to look at her with a relaxed expression: "Nothing serious, I just wanted to ask you, are you getting used to living in the mansion these days?"
"It's pretty good. It's much freer than I thought." Cheng Yuwei shrugged. "But some people are really annoying."
"Really?" Ling Xiaotian raised an eyebrow. "Tell me, who is so annoying?"
Cheng Yuwei deliberately didn't look at him, turned around and walked to the other side: "Don't say it! Lest some people become self-righteous again."
Ling Xiaotian quickly caught up, reached out and grabbed her wrist, and turned her to face him: "Weiwei, do you really find me annoying?"
Cheng Yuwei's heart skipped a beat. She looked up at his deep eyes and was speechless for a long time.
"Or..." Ling Xiaotian deliberately slowed down his tone, "You say you find me annoying, but in fact, you can't leave me alone in your heart?"
"Ling Xiaotian!" Cheng Yuwei was so embarrassed that she shook off his hand and turned to run away.
Ling Xiaotian looked at her back as she ran away with a red face and couldn't help laughing out loud.
Undercurrent reappears
The sweet days did not last long, as an anonymous letter broke the temporary tranquility.
The letter read: "Cheng Yuwei cannot be trusted. Her true identity is your enemy."
Ling Xiaotian frowned as he read the words on the letter. He knew someone was deliberately trying to sow discord, but the content of the letter still made him wary.
That night, he specially called Cheng Yuwei over, ostensibly to discuss trivial matters in the mansion, but in fact he was testing her intentionally or unintentionally.
"Have you felt anything is wrong in the mansion recently?" he asked casually.
"No, everything is normal." Cheng Yuwei answered calmly.
Ling Xiaotian stared into her eyes, as if trying to find some flaw in them. But her expression remained clear, without a trace of evasion.
"What's wrong? Do you suspect someone is playing tricks in the mansion?" Cheng Yuwei couldn't help asking when she saw his serious expression.
Ling Xiaotian didn't answer directly, but patted her shoulder gently: "It's okay, you have a good rest, leave the rest to me."
Cheng Yuwei thought he was a little strange, but did not ask any more questions.
That night, Ling Xiaotian ordered his trusted confidants to secretly investigate the source of the anonymous letter. He didn't want to doubt Cheng Yuwei, but he couldn't let any possible threats lurk around him.
Meanwhile, Cheng Yuwei stood alone by the window, looking thoughtfully at the night sky. She had a vague feeling that a storm was about to come.
