Chapter 283 283: Gathering of the Gym Leaders
Chapter 283 283: Gathering of the Gym Leaders
After noticing the three Cerulean Gym sisters, everyone visibly relaxed.
"By the way, Leader Blaine, do you know the rules of this tournament?" Sam asked curiously.
"It'll probably be decided through a drawing ceremony," Blaine explained. "Gym Leaders from Kanto and Johto will draw lots, and whoever gets matched together will battle."
Then Sam suddenly smiled.
"Leader Brock, Leader Lt. Surge, we'll have to work hard for Kanto. After all, we're already behind one point to zero."
At first, Brock and Lt. Surge looked confused, but they quickly understood and burst into knowing smiles.
"Leader Sam, talking about people behind their backs isn't very gentlemanly," a voice suddenly said from behind.
At some point, the three sisters from the Cerulean Gym had walked over.
Sam smiled calmly.
"I wasn't talking behind your backs."
"I was saying it right in front of you, Miss Sakura."
"Pfft—"
Hearing Sam's perfectly straight-faced sarcasm, Yellow couldn't hold back her laughter.
"I-I'm sorry!"
Realizing she had laughed out loud, Yellow quickly lowered her head and apologized.
But she had worried too much.
The Cerulean sisters were far thicker-skinned than she imagined. Even after being mocked directly to their faces, none of the three showed the slightest embarrassment.
"Sam, what do you think we should do?" Sakura finally asked helplessly.
Honestly, even Sam felt a headache coming on.
If the Cerulean Gym sisters went on stage, they would embarrass not only the Cerulean Gym, but potentially all of Kanto.
And this tournament allowed each Gym only a single appearance.
No matter how strong Sam was, he could only secure one point by himself. That made every point from the other Gyms extremely important.
If there were any way to help them, Sam would gladly do it.
Unfortunately, he truly had no solution.
Seeing the hopeful expression on Sakura's face, Sam could only shake his head helplessly.
"Sakura, this tournament is being handled personally by Lance."
"I'd advise you to give up those little ideas."
"If you lose honestly, Lance might still show some leniency out of respect for the Cerulean Gym's past contributions."
After hearing that answer, Sakura's face immediately darkened.
Placing her hopes on Lance's mercy was practically no different from surrendering.
Everyone knew what kind of person Lance was.
Even if it were his own cousin Clair and the Blackthorn Gym, he would still act ruthlessly if their performance disappointed him.
As the conversation continued, more and more Gym Leaders gradually arrived.
Besides the Kanto Gym Leaders, Sam also met the Johto representatives participating in the exchange tournament.
There was Falkner from Violet City, Bugsy from Azalea Town, Whitney from Goldenrod City, Morty from Ecruteak City, Chuck from Cianwood City, Jasmine from Olivine City, Pryce from Mahogany Town, and Clair from Blackthorn City.
Compared to Kanto's Gym Leaders, who included many veterans from older generations, most of Johto's Gym Leaders were much younger and full of energy.
Still, the Kanto side remained fairly confident overall.
Although the Cerulean Gym was basically dead weight, the overall strength of the other Kanto Gyms was still extremely impressive.
There was Blaine's Cinnabar Gym, led by the veteran powerhouse himself.
There was Koga's Fuchsia Gym, famous for being low-profile yet terrifyingly strong.
And of course, there was Sam's Viridian Gym, which had recently become incredibly famous.
As long as nothing unexpected happened, those three Gyms alone were expected to secure several victories for Kanto.
On top of that, Brock, Lt. Surge, Erika, and Sabrina were all powerful Gym Leaders in their own right.
Overall, Kanto's chances of victory were still very high.
That was why Blaine, Sam, Lt. Surge, and Brock had remained relatively relaxed the entire time.
"Oh, our last companions have finally arrived."
Erika and Sabrina, whom Sam hadn't seen for quite some time, finally entered the hotel.
The moment the three beautiful women stepped inside, everyone at Sam's table frowned simultaneously.
Naturally, the problem wasn't Erika or Sabrina.
It was the third woman.
Janine, representing the Fuchsia Gym.
"This just became troublesome…" Lt. Surge muttered unhappily.
Even Sam hadn't expected the representative of the Fuchsia Gym to be Janine instead of Koga.
That unexpected development completely disrupted all previous calculations.
The guaranteed point that Koga should have secured had now turned into an uncertain match instead.
No wonder Lt. Surge looked annoyed.
Although Janine was definitely far stronger than the Cerulean Gym sisters, she still fell somewhat short compared to Johto's Gym Leaders.
Without extraordinary focus and luck, it would be difficult for her to defeat any of Johto's representatives.
Now the pressure had shifted onto the remaining six Kanto Gym Leaders.
"Looks like we'll have to work harder after all, Lt. Surge," Sam said helplessly.
